Thursday 28th January 2021 – Elizabeth Street Pier to Quarantine Bay, Bruny Island

Even though Hobart is a beautiful city with so much history and gorgeous gardens it was time to move on from the hustle and bustle. We departed Hobart at 0920 for Quarantine Bay with a 5-10 knot north easterly and a 1m swell rolling up the Derwent .

Georgie started back at school this morning so as we motor sailed down the Derwent, she completed Maths, Spelling, English, Japanese, Meteorology, Navigation and History. Passing Kettering brought back memories for Mark when he came down with Greg and Murray to pick up Shadie and steam her back to Lakes Entrance.

We arrived at Quarantine Bay at 1232. It was great to back on anchor again without the sound of squeaking fenders and privacy again. Mark and Georgie briefly tried fishing, but to no avail.

Later in the afternoon we went explored the old quarantine station overlooking the bay. The station was operational between 1884 and the mid 1900’s and used used during the Small Pox and Spanish flu epidemics and to quarantine soldiers returning from WWI and WWII. Between 1971 and 1986 the site was used as a plant quarantine station.
