We got up early to make the most of the day before the front come through, jumped in the dinghy and motored around to Clayton’s corner to climb Mount Beattie. Upon arrival there were a number of kayaks in the bay and 4 people on the jetty. We were told that the group of kayakers had arrived at Claytons Corner the previous night and one of the kayakers had tripped on some chicken wire that had come unstuck on the jetty and fallen, put his hand out to break his fall when he broke his thumb and then hit his chin on a pole which required stitches. The group were on the first day of their month long kayaking trip. Thankfully there was a helicopter at the airstrip at Melaleuca which was picking up another patient, so they were able to pick up this poor guy at the same time.
After catching up with some fellow yachties we continued our walk up to the summit of Mt Beattie and back again just as the front came through. We got caught in a downpour just as we were leaving the jetty making it back to the boat totally saturated. It was a good excuse for Mark to light the diesel heater as we settled in for the afternoon and waited for the gale force winds to come through.
