Saturday 2nd January 2021 – Banks Strait

A narrow weather window became available so we left Trousers Point at 7:30am to head to Spike Cove (on Clarke Island) with the aim of waiting there for another weather/tide window to cross Banks Strait. On arriving off Spike Cove Mark made the decision to keep going as the weather conditions and tide were favourable.

The seas across Banks Strait were a confused chop but as we rounded the top end of Tassie and entered the Tasman Sea the sea changed to a 1-1.5 metre swell from the east. Dolphins joined us for part of the journey, they are always welcome company. The initial plan was to go as far as Binalong Bay (north of St Helens) but as we got closer we realised that the bay would not offer much protection from the north easterly swell so we pressed on for Freycinet Peninsula.

  1. Hi ya’ll. G & G and Wen and I were being spoilt at Wes and Pams as you were sailing down. I was keeping an eye on you as I guessed you were heading to Binalong. I was surprised when you kept going. Now know why! Love the blog, Gaz
