Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th January 2021 – Elizabeth Street Pier, Hobart

We have paid for one week’s fees to berth at Elizabeth Street Pier, which gives us access to water & power (if we had a 60m extension lead). The first job to be completed was to give the outside of the boat a clean and to scrub the decks. Once this was done the next priority, according to Georgie, was to get a real ice cream, which we did not argue with.

We went for a walk around Battery Point which has very impressive old architecture and landscaping.

On Saturday morning we wondered down to the Salamanca market.

On Sunday we extracted the bikes from the lazarette, assembled them, and rode to the Hobart Botanical Gardens which is about 4km’s out of the city. On the way we passed underneath the Tasman bridge that crosses the Derwent River. The bridge had to be rebuilt in 1975 after a ship collided with one of the columns, resulting in several spans of the bridge collapsing on the ship and killing 12 people.

The Botanic gardens would be a great place for a warm day as there is a lot of shade and water features. All parts of the garden were very nice, but the Japanese garden was certainly the most impressive.

Georgie’s our chief researcher when it comes to Ice Cream, so once we’d been to the Botanical Gardens we continued on the bike path towards Moonah which is home to Tasmania’s Valhalla Ice Creamery – it was worth the ride! On the way back we stopped at KMART where Georgie bought Lucy a $5 soccer ball. Lucy loves playing soccer and could play for hours. Her favourite position is defence of course but once she gets the ball you really struggle to get it off her. This is fantastic entertainment and exercise for Lucy.

We found a park near the Hobart cenotaph which is perfect for letting Lucy off the lead. The park is also popular with kite fliers and some of the kites are spectacular.

Yes that’s a whale kite!

Georgie’s garden has taken off and is growing well with snow peas starting to appear. This is surprising considering they had to re-potted after our trip past Tasman Island a week ago.

  1. Those botanic gardens are so good! One of the first places we visited in Tassie after seeing it on so many episodes of gardening Australia over the years. On another visit we enjoyed the Antarctic/ southern islands pavilion. Nice and cold in there on a hot day!
Can’t wait for pics of kunanyi!
