Saturday 6th March – Clytie Cove to Spain Bay, Port Davey

Finally, the wind and the rain stopped, Mark had been following the forecast and a high was due to cross south west Tasmania late Saturday-Sunday. We decided that we would leave Port Davey and make the voyage to Strahan on Sunday. With the view to make the most of our final day we pulled up anchor and motored across to the Davey River. After securing the anchor Mark, Georgie and I jumped in the dinghy with provisions and safety equipment for the 9 nautical mile trip up the Davey River to look at the first gorge. As we headed for the Davey River bar, we discovered that there was a slight issue, the tide was out and there was a southerly swell coming up the bay which meant that ½ metre waves were breaking across the bar. We had a look for access from a few different angles but decided that it was not worth the risk, so we headed back to Escapade pulled up anchor and motored across to Spain Bay where we would spend the last night.

There was a great walk at Spain Bay where you cross the button grass plains over to Stephens Bay and see a number of huge middens that were created by aboriginals many years ago.
